carreau v. vitre
is one used more often than the other? is there a difference? Tx

no difference. I think it's historical. the root of "carreau" seems to imply that it's relative to a square.
The two are used. "vitres" is more used in Paris where i leave but we know "carreau", I think it's this kind of word which the use is different according to the region. I think somewhere people use more "carreau".
