Do you know the correct rules for applying footnotes in French text? Before or after the punctuation? In all circumstances?

Voici un exemple de note de bas de page selon les règles françaises: http://www.meeus-d.be/photos/typo/gall1952.png

Donc, avant la ponctuation.

In cases like this, stand back and think: what do you actually mean by "the correct rules"?

- if you're writing for a particular publication/university etc, then the "correct rules" are whatever it says in that publication's style guide (or the one they choose to adopt)-- so just do whatever that style guide tells you to do;

- otherwise, there are no "correct rules". Do what you think looks best and/or is most logical in the particular situation in question.
