My teacher told us to learn it but he never explained how to use it. Any clues?

You can find some explanations on the grammar part : http://www.french-linguistics.co.uk/grammar/subjunctive_what_is.shtml

I've been told to use subjunctive with the expression "Il faut que," but there are others, too.

The subjonctive is used with the several expressions : "il faut que", "avant que", "il est nécessaire que", "j'aimerais que", "je regrette que"," je ne suis pas sûr que", "je crains que", "pour que", "sans que", "quoi que",...

As you can see, the subjonctive is always used with "que".

But it's impossible too use it with "après que" event if a lot of french people use it.
