I'm a very entry level French speaker, and will be traveling to Paris soon with the hopes of taking lots of  photos of french shopkeepers in their place of business.

I want to be as respectful as possible and am trying to find the best phrase to ask if I can take their photo.

Google translate suggests:

"Puis-je vous prendre en photo?"

Is this too formal? Is "Puis-je vous photo" too casual?

"Puis-je vous prendre en photo" is very formal.

When you speak, you would say "Est-ce que je peux vous prendre en photo?" or simply "je peux vous prendre en photo?" (which is very casual)

Excellent. "je peux vous prendre en photo?" is what I'll go with.

Thanks! (Err, merci!)
