Mmmm you could say désagréable, or translate it literally pas très/trop sympathique, pas très agréable. I'm not sure if that's what they're looking for?

Thank you I did put that but that but the two across on his crossword puzzle is American or Americain, so that does not go with the desagreable and the 13 arcoss which is the 9th letter is smart which I put intelligent so that does not fit either. It is 12 letters down the first being A and the 9th being I, but meaning not so nice. I have tried & tried and can't figure it out. I do good to speak English let alone help my grandson with French. Thank you for your help
