describing a farm: "Les dependances spacieuses, construites solidement a l'ancienne, couvraient en fer a cheval le corps principal d'habitation, due cote des terres";

am i right in guessing that "dependances" are out-buildings?

and "fer a cheval"

Dépendances = outbuildings, outhouses. You're right.

fer à cheval = horseshoe. The outbuildings are forming a horseshoe shape, they're surrounding the main house.
