Ton métier

If you want to know what someone is doing or rather his profession, it is not very accurate the use the following.
What are you doing?.

It should be 'what do you do for a living?'.

I guess the French equivalent is the following.
Qu'est-ce que vous faites comme travail?
[I hope I am correct. Please tell me. There may be some other ways to write this.]

Je travaille dans la presse.
Je travaille dans la boutique.

If you want to specifically ask for what your the person you are talking to is doing in order to bring the bacon home, "qu'est-ce-que vous faites comme travail ?" or "que faites-vous comme travail ?" or "vous faites quoi comme travail ?" are indeed perfectly appropriate.

If you want to be more generic, you can also say "Que faites-vous dans la vie ?".

It is about bringing bacon home.
I have heard people say 'what are you doing?'.
It is inaccurate if you want to know the way you buy your bacon.
