I'm familiar with the former but i came across the latter in a dictionary for the first time.  will i hear "je me suis tenu coi" or "je me suis reste’ coi."?

merci d'avance

i should add that there's a distinction in english between "keeping quiet" and "being speechless" and being speechless is being used in addition to remaining silent to define "tenir coi."   When you are speechless, you were so surprised/shocked/insulted by what the other person just said that you can't think of a response.  "keeping quiet" just means that you decided not to respond.
