Par un belle soiree de dimanche, nous sommes alles a l'extreme limite de la paroisse chez de braves gens, s'il en fut, qui nous avaient invites a diner.

 

On a beautiful Sunday evening, we are going to the extreme border of the  parish place of brave people, _________ , whom we have invited to dinner.

I am guessing  but it might mean  " if ever there were".

Is that a literary expression?

N.B. Be careful of your tenses.

Also, "brave" in French means something closer to "decent", "good and honest" (with a slight connotation of "well-intentioned but not very intelligent", "nice but dim").

I think it's "...who invited us to dinner." If it was the other way around avaient would be avons or avions.
