Plus tard, quand Max aura 18 ans, il va passer(passera?) le permis et ses parents lui vont acheter(acheterons) une voiture

Is it ok if I retain the original sentence or should change the futur proche into futur simple?

I'd prefer futur simple, and you have an error. Acheterons should be acheteront -- it's 3rd person plural.
I think either could be used, but the "va passer" construction is more informal in this case.

Note a couple of other things:
- I think "passer son permis" would be more usual
- "lui vont acheter" would be "vont lui acheter" (French used to allow this construction, so you may have seen it in older texts, but nowadays it's essentially archaic)
