the resistance agent is coming out of a train station and has to go through a french police barrier; his valise with a radio transmitter is opened and the officer asks him what it is; he replies with sang-froid:

"un appareil de T.S.F."

after which the policeman tells him he can pass through;

i'm guessing this was some kind of joke, which worked; but what was the T.S.F.?

This wasn't a joke. TSF is an old word for "radio". (it means "télégraphie OR téléphonie sans fil")
Thanks Marc; I see what happened; the agent told the french policeman the truth, and he was lucky that the man was more of a frenchman than a vichy agent, so he let the resistance agent go.
