greetings; what were "les francs-tireurs"?, and what is their significance?

when the setting is a house deep in the french countryside during wwii and the german occupation of france, and two elderly women are hiding a man of the resistance and being told about the resistance activities, and they, who were children during the franco-prussian war, compare the resistants to "les francs-tireurs", adding that the resistants are "honnetes and bien eleves"

Merci Frank; i read the wiki entry and found it very interesting;

weren't les francs tireurs an older organization? the old ladies used the name for the rresistance but the impression i have is that they were familiar with it from the franco prussian war,
