By mistake I included the word 'chiot' in an email to a friend believing that it was an affectionate word like 'puppy' would be in English.

I now know it is not. But it was taken in fun.

Can anyone tell me what is rude about it. Or how it might be viewed as rude.

Thank you,

Hi Gavin,

A "chiot" is indeed the word for a puppy.

But we would only call an animal a "chiot", not a person.

You can call it a "poulet" (chicken, but it doesn't mean that he's a coward person, just a young man), though.
