where do I begin??

I need serious help starting to learn basic french.
I wanted to e-mail a french friend of mine something nice in her language but after searching through online dictionaries I've realized it isn't as simple as it may sound.
So how do I begin to learn?

Hi Kristophe,

Taking a 101 class could be a good way to start learning French.

But there are other resources that you might want to have a look at in order to get started.

Neil's web site is a good starting point: http://french-linguistics.co.uk/

If you install iTunes on your computer, you can also download a bunch of podcasts (free audio lessons) that are really valuable resources as well.

Watching videos can also be helpful. http://www.dailymotion.com is a Youtube-like web site featuring a lot of French content.

Maybe some other users could also recommend good textbooks to start learning French.

I downloaded a 'slow version of the news' podcast the other day and found it to be very useful.

Unfortunately I am unable to access this resource again as I can't find it anywhere on the site.
