good morning all;

the word is "saillante";

larousse says it is the angle at which mountain goats (e.g.) stand in relation to the ground which is rising sharply;

in the book it's part of a description of the inmates of the camp during ww2, it's spring finally and they're outside taking in the sun, and their bodies are showing, so their spine is aigue --sharply showing i translate this---is it all right?

then their "cotes" are "saillantes"

and i can see that this has to do with their ribs, but how to put it in english?

Hello Isabelle,

It means "prominent", "protuberant", ie. you can clearly see their ribs, either because they received a severe injury, or because they are starving.

HIH.
