Having come in contact with the word "envie" during a session of french class, I wish to ask.

Comparing the word "like" in English  to the french word "envie" , the word "envie" seem to be used as a possessive. Example, J'ai envie.....  je n'ai pas envie........

I just want to be clear on this

In this case envie is  a noun . feminine : une envie. coud be a verb as well (envier)

I think you can't compare like and envie

I'd like to do something : j'aimerais faire quelque chose

while "avoir envie de" is closer "to feel like" or wish

I feel like doing something  : j'ai envie de faire quelque chose

Hope this help
