Gail -- the French word source can mean the "source" of something as in English.

It also commonly refers to a natural source of water-- i.e. what would usually be termed a "spring" in English.

Well, as I say, "source" is commonly used to refer to a spring or water source. In the painting, the figure is pouring water into the ground, thus acting like a spring...
