Hi I purchased an Alexandra Churchill tapestry to hang in a stairwell. It has a beautiful air balloon on it with a ribbon streaming off the top and it says something like
Montsolfier nous apprend port de frunchir les airs--it's kinda hard to tell the exact letters because of it being a tapestry. Can anyone tell me what that means?  It's her Balloon over Poppy--you could probably google it but the letters are even more difficult to determine in a picture. Merci Beaucoup.

My guess is something like Montsolfier is someone or something's name maybe? Except solfier has something to do with singing and a mountain is a mont? And then it says something about you learn to get over the port on the air?  Hey, I got the "1784" part figured out.

Help. Thanks!

Hi,

"Montsolfier" should be Montgolfier, who invented the air balloons: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montgolfier_brothers

"frunchir" is franchir.

However, the whole sentence "Montgolfier nous apprend port de franchir les airs" doesn't make any sense, mainly because of the word "port" in the middle of it. Are you sure it's written "port" ?
Could it be: "Montgolfier nous apprend l'art de franchir les airs" ?
Yes yes it could be the second sentence that you wrote. What does it mean???
Oh--how about Mntgolfier you learned the art of flying in the air? maybe?
In this case "apprend" means "teach": so something like "Montgolfier teaches us the art of taking to the sky"/"...of getting through the air" etc.
Thank you both so much! Merci for your mercy in helping me.
