GENEALOGY TERMS

I am doing some census research in genealogy and I do not understand the following terms in relation to a family. The mother who is widowed is described as PEN-MERE and the children are listed as either PEN-FILLE OR PEN-FIL depending on whether they are female or male children. Could someone elaborate on what these relationship terms mean?
