Hello all.I am a sixty year old caucasian American male trying to recall a song from my childhood. I started singing a French song to my five month old grandson and I don't know where in my memory it came from. My wife and daughter(the infant's mother) asked me where I learned French and I have no clue. The tune came out something like this " dee tem wa pu qua sher madmwasella, dee tem wa pu qua la ve ay gay. Dee tem wa pu qua sher madmwasella, ah se cu, par se cu, vu may may." Any clue as to where in my memory this came from and what song it is and what it means would be appreciated. Please contact through email(wrnjnz@sbcglobal.net). Thank you in advance. Warren in Wisconsin USA.

Dites a moi pourquoi la vie est belle
dites a moi pourquoi la vie est gai

This comes from the musical South Pacific. Google it or Youtube it, and you can find the libretto and videos.

Hey Pamela, Thank you for the quick response. I thought someone might have slipped French lessons to me subliminally. I really could not remember how that song came from my lips. But I must say, my five month old grandson was entranced, with the words, not my singing. I'll have to keep it in my fussy arsenal. Of course I had to buy a South Pacific dvd off ebay and watched it already. The tune actually shows up twice in the film. If I start singing in any other languages I've never learned, I'll be sure to contact you again. Thanks again, Warren Jones, out.

Warren, you were young when the musical was popular, and there were many stage, film, and tv versions. You could hear the songs on the radio, and Dites-moi was the most popular song. Children pick things up very easily. This is the argument teachers make when trying to get foreign languages taught in primary schools. You are a perfect example of the phenomenon. Enjoy singing to your grandson!
Pam
