question about a word translation...

Hi,

I have a question regarding this phrase: "giftcard holder" (not an envelope, but some kind of paper thingy that has an insert for a starbucks plastic giftcard). I tried looking in the french/english dictionary, and couldn't find a reasonable translation (I was trying to explain to a friend who has limited english). Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you :)

Hello Ellen,

Off the top of my head I can't find any direct translation for this.

I think we would call it "un support pour cartes de voeux" (if the gift card is always visible) or "une pochette pour cartes de voeux" (if you can fold it like an envelope).

Thanks for the quick response, Frank. Though -- do you think "voeux" or "cadeau" is better to use? I'm sure my friend will understand either, but if I'm reading it correctly (in my limited french -- you probably have a better handle on french than I do! ;)), the "voeux" phrase might translate as a paper card of wishes rather than a giftcard with monetary value(? I haven't heard voeux used to describe "gift" before...but I could just be completely out of the loop with the latest French terms.)

Hi Ellen,

Indeed, if it's a giftcard with monetary value, you can call it "un bon cadeau".

So it'd be "un support pour un bon cadeau" or "une pochette pour un bon cadeau".

("bon" means good as an adjective, but coupon/goodie as a noun)
