Can someone please give me advice, regarding a French translator ' calculator '

Hello, Can someone give me advice on a good translator please?

I am going to work in France soon. I have good basics,

and wish to properly learn the language.

On Amazon I could buy some models like :-

Franklin LM6000b speaker

Franklin French to English dictionary ( BFQ570 )

Can someone give me good advice on what to buy?

Do you have (or will you get) a smartphone?

Unless you're going to be working in a lead-lined chamber with no Internet connection, I would be tempted to think more about resources such as an electronic dictionary and possibly exercises for your smartphone or computer. Larousse, Collins etc all do iPhone/iPad versions of their dictionaries and I imagine they probably do Android versions too.

Also bear in mind that a dictionary won't be the be-all and end-all to "properly learning the language". You will probably need some kind of grammar book at some point. One book that might help to you fill in any gaps in your basic knowledge is this one which I reviewed a couple of years ago:

It's a little simplistic in places but it's not bad overall for "giving you pragmatic advice to get you up to speed". The pronunciation section of the book (and indeed of most textbooks) is pretty poor. But on the other hand, you'll be in France. You might also want to think about some kind of themed vocabulary book such as this one:

You don't need to panic-buy the above, however: once you get to France, a good bookshop such as Fnac will also stock these types of vocab book.
