peux and puis

When should we should [peux] and [puis]? Both mean the same right? Is it that we use [peux] when you want to say "je peux", and if we want to say the inverted form, then we use "puis-je"?

    Exactly, "puis" is the old form of  "peux" (in "vieux français").

     

    We use "puis" in interrogative and inverted form :

    "Puis-je avoir le sel je vous prie?"

     In this sentence "puis-je" is more beautiful to say than "peux-je" , it is a poetic heritage.

     

    We use "puis" in elevated form (langage soutenu), but rarely :

    "Si je puis me permettre, j'aimerais vous appeler ce soir."

    "Il n'est pas très intelligent, si je puis dire."

    "Je puis le faire."
