Remnants of the old French Empire.  European languages spread throughout the world as European countries spread out claiming colonies throughout the world, suppressing native cultures with those of Europe.  In this regard, Canada is most interesting having two official languages derived from the colonization first of France then of Great Britain.  French is one of the four official languages of Switzerland: I wonder how many Swiss use French as their first language.
