I've been leading French for at least 4 years now and I know over 4000 words. However I still can't make sentences, understand spoken French or read a lot of stuff. (I swapped my phone to French to help immerse me and I get stuck a lot)

Over all I fell like I haven't advanced since year 1 and it's seriously making me debate quiting because it's stressing me out and I'm starting to question if there's even a point.

What should I do?

What should I do?
Will I be able to read fluently in French?tag:www.forum.french-linguistics.co.uk,2017-06-18:3179028:Topic:1263042017-06-18T05:16:43.706ZDigby Greenhttp://www.forum.french-linguistics.co.uk/profile/DigbyGreen

Hello

I am an older English speaking guy.

I am trying to learn to read French history books, and translate some of the pages.

At the moment it takes me an hour or so to roughly translate a small paragraph.

Do you think it is possible to get to the stage where I could read a French book at the same speed as an English book?

What is a good way to learn vocabulary and use it?tag:www.forum.french-linguistics.co.uk,2016-07-02:3179028:Topic:1238972016-07-02T16:40:13.085ZJodie-Mary Smithhttp://www.forum.french-linguistics.co.uk/profile/JodieMarymith

I've been learning vocabulary (I think I know a little over 100 words), but I've realised that although I know the words, I find it difficult to use them when talking, are there any good ways to memorise vocabulary and then be able to use it in a sentence?

How can I make best use of my time in France?tag:www.forum.french-linguistics.co.uk,2016-01-01:3179028:Topic:1209462016-01-01T21:45:50.564ZJameshttp://www.forum.french-linguistics.co.uk/profile/James362

Hi, I will be working in France later this year, living in a major city, for a period of just over four months. My work (9-5) will all be in English and I would say I am around the intermediate level - so, I was wondering how can I best use my time there in order to learn French and is there anything I should be doing in the months before I go that could help me? Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have recently met a woman whose mother is German but who refuses to speak German to her because she is afraid of being corrected. My father (nominally French but brought up in England) was very reluctant to speak French to his mother, who was French and taught French, for the same reason and his brother refused to speak French to her at all (though his French wasn't bad). I usually spoke French to her, possibly because I was at one remove and didn't get corrected quite so much.

I wonder how common this is. Does anyone here have a similar experience?
Acquiring a "Cultured" French accent.tag:www.forum.french-linguistics.co.uk,2015-05-10:3179028:Topic:1185972015-05-10T14:50:50.118Zdaniel costellohttp://www.forum.french-linguistics.co.uk/profile/danielcostello

I am studying French, and I’m quite keen on developing a “cultured” French accent.

Now, I know there is a great deal of “liaison” involved in French conversation - and a lot of clipping of words and squeezing them together - but is all of that acceptable in “cultured French” ?

Also, is there any audio material out there that deals with acquiring a “cultured” French accent.

Thanks.

Hey folks,

I've been wondering if it's possible to create a better experience for people to practice speaking using something like Skype or Google Hangouts. I have some ideas and I'd love to find some volunteers willing to help me test them out by spending 45 minutes or so having an online video conversation. I'm looking for people who speak some French and want to practice as well as native speakers.

If you think this sounds interesting or have questions, please ask me here.…
