When I was a young lad, I had no difficulty in knowing whom to address as "tu": relatives and friends of my own age. As I grew up, it got more difficult, especially as I was spending most of my time in England and losing the daily contact with French conventions. Nowadays (and I am in my 70s), I find it quite confusing. The conventions seem to be a bit more relaxed, but I have a friend in his 40s, whom I address as "tu" and who addresses me in the same way. His wife refuses point-blank to do so, but is happy for me to call her "tu" (I don't, as it seems one-sided.) She says that I am older than her parents and that it would be wrong. I imagine that it is still the case that a younger person wouldn't address a much older person as "tu"(other than a relative) without a specific invitation to do so. At what stage of acquaintance should the older person make the suggestion?

Comments from francophone residents in France (or, indeed, other francophone countries) would be interesting.
Continuing use of francstag:www.forum.french-linguistics.co.uk,2014-05-25:3179028:Topic:1133862014-05-25T13:59:09.963ZJean Dervinhttp://www.forum.french-linguistics.co.uk/profile/JeanDervin

A friend has expressed surprise at still finding prices displayed in francs (obviously as a euro equivalent). This is near the Swiss border. Can't say that I've seen it myself, but would welcome comments.

I hope this is an appropriate use of this forum. I guess it just about fits into "French Culture"?

I am really looking forward to practising my French properly this summer and was wondering if anyone would be able to recommend any destinations not too far from the Channel Tunnel somewhere near the France/Belgium border. The ideal place would be a cottage out in the countryside to use as a base but well placed to visit towns, cities, attractions, etc on both sides of the border. My group will be a mix of adults, young children and seniors.

Also, we enjoy visiting beaches. Are there any nice beaches on the coastal stretch between Calais and Oostende?

Any recommendations/advice would be most welcome!

Merci d'avance

I watched the French film "I've Loved You So Long" at the weekend and was pleasantly surprised to see Kristen Scott Thomas in the lead role. She has always seemed quintessentially English to me, and I had no idea she lives in France and speaks French fluently. A bit more Googling and I found out that the actress that plays her sister was the partner of Antoine De Caunes for several years. He used to be on UK TV a lot with shows like Rapido and Eurotrash.

I found Kristen Scott Thomas's lines particularly easy to follow. Does she speak French with an obvious foreign accent? Perhaps she speaks slowly with an English accent or maybe the fact that her character was very quiet, only speaking the minimum was what made it easier to follow?

Very good film by the way - quite moving.

L’Inde était encore suivait le “sati“. Le police lui suit parceque il pense que M.Fogg était le voleur de Banque Anglettère.
Hello,

Are general questions about France welcomed on this site? I assume they are as there is such a category called 'French culture'. If so I wonder if there were any earldoms in La Monge in the past? And if there any earldoms in France now?

Thanks
